COMIC

Within the Nōku Te Ao kaupapa, we were challenged to think outside the box and be creative with our approaches to tackling stigma and discrimination.
In the possibility space, while brainstorming, we came up with the idea of exploring the impacts of colonization, especially after listening to Maria talking about the timeline of mental health discrimination and terminologies. Inspired by the book by Toby Morris, we thought that one of the problems surrounding this space and colonization is the fact that we get stuck in a space of what went wrong.
We wondered what would happen if we explored the facts of what happened in a way that didn’t put anyone down but rather moved into the dream space of what could’ve been but most importantly, where do we go now and how do we move forward?

The purpose for the comic is to create a narrative that educates and explores colonisation in three parts in a way that encourages the conversation without carrying the heaviness of the mamae caused.
The first part, Tika, will capture an overview of colonisation, with 3 main legislative acts that passed which impacted Māori, and their co-existence with Pākeha. The second part, Pono, will aim to explore what things could’ve looked like had colonization happened in the right way. The third part, Aroha, will aim to explore the way forward and the actions all people in Aotearoa need to take to work together.
This will hopefully shift the narrative that we currently get stuck in of what went wrong. It’s about acknowledging what happened, the effects of it, but moving forward to a collective understanding of where we can move towards a Peoples and a Nation.
